BugCON '12

Well.. all is ready for BugCON '12 or I think so…

Five years ago I founded BugCON, the first edition was a little meeting with close friends, people who are very involved in security research, hackers, script kiddies, etc, etc… and I created it with the idea of a free hacker convention, where all people who wants can show their research.

Currently these dream happens. BugCON is not a comercial event like bSecure Conference or a low level conference like UNAM Security Conference. BugCON is the most important hacker convention in Mexico, and BugCON's comite don't say that, people say that, reseachers say that, speakers around the country and in USA, Argentina, Spain, Ecuador, etc, etc say that… all people who wants to participate can do it. Hackers from Mexico and other places follow our efforts year with year.

I only can offer thanks, thanks a lot of every body who do BugCON possible, thanks to my friend Armin who coordinates de BugCON's comite (ok, there isn't a comite, but if it would exist obviously Armin would coordinate it), Maf who are our principal sysadmin, webmaster, “milusos”.. our staff who are ready to help us next week, and friends like hkm who totally support BugCON, Sandino Araico who support this kind of inicitavies, our gold sponsor ESET thanks a lot to Gisele Giabetti, and our friends like nitr0us, Hugo, calderpwn, hecky, and all that you know. Our parnters eKoparty at Argentina, RootedCON at Spain, H2HC at Brazil, DragonJar, SuricataIDS, IPN, etc.

Belive when I say if you get a little of knowledge, inspiration or what ever from BugCON we feel fulfilled. BugCON tries that, create a security culture, show the mexican research, be a point of party for all hackers and inspire new people.

BugCON Security Conference: Safety us just a myth…!

And of course, after CON… (organized by nitr0us):

I wanted to reply to your post… But the reply turned out to be longer than expected, so I moved it to my blog. In short: I think this message, rather than attracting more people to BugCon, might drive people away and give it a bad reputation.

It's perfectly fine for you to organize a party in whatever fashion you want… But mixing the concepts is just a sure way to alienate many people (for starters, most women, and surely much more than that).

Woman are probably not even 10% of the hacker population even less so 50%, sincerely you are overreacting. I don't think most of the people who are really interested, in the topics they will talk about, will feel discouraged to go because of this. I could go on an formulate a bigger reply but that would be giving to much importance to your words (which are worthy of none).

P.S. Mis mejores deseos hacia el evento.

“Woman are probably not even 10% of the hacker population even less so 50%, sincerely you are overreacting.”

Correct analysis, wrong conclusion. The share will never increase if people continue with such arrogant and sexist behavior. Of course then we might be speaking about a self-fulfilling prophesy.

I'm sorry you see it that way, Jorge, as probably you will help keeping woman participation marginal. Yes, I am talking about 50%, as slightly over 50% of our country's population is female. There is nothing that mandates they should keep out of the computing-related areas of interest. They are, yes, for cultural reasons - but we should strive to reduce that difference. FWIW, in DebConf we have managed to advance from a ~3% to a consistent ~10% participation in eight years. It's still too little, but at the same time, a very clear reaction.

But even if it is 10%, even if it were 5% or less… Don't you think this kind of messages makes a woman that was considering whether to be part of that 10% say “that's not for me”? Isn't that 10% of women important?

Puff… I feel like a politician, misinterpreted.

First the image doesn't correspond to BugCON, it corresponds to the after BugCON party, that is not organized by BugCON's staff. And as an uncensonred conference we publish any kind of image, comment, invitation, stuff, etc.. that people who attends to BugCON create.

If some day a girl wants to participated doing an image with men without clothes or what ever that she wants, we'll publish it.

BugCON is not closed to woman participation, we don't have statistics but maybe 40% of the participants are girls, something like 1000 girls per edition. And thats great!

Into the staff are woman, who help us in all the activities, speakers, sponsors, mmm… I don't know.

I think that this kind of misinterpretations are totally created by social taboos. I trust in that all woman who attends to BugCON are mature enought, and can understand beetwen a comic image related to a some speakers who wants to go for a beer after the conference; and the technical activities related with the conference.

All woman who were attend to BugCON can talk about it. And can say that BugCON is conference open for them, and they never have had any restrictions or problem at the event.

I respect Gunnar's opinion a lot, but I agree with Jorge, this comment are overreacting.

I'm a woman, and a Debian Developer. I understand that you as male could not understand the problem, but showing boobs for promoting an after-con party, is actually excluding females.

I mean, during an after-con party, I'd like to party with people who consider me an hacker, not who consider me Boobs on Legs.

Gunnar and Phil have explained this better than me, I decided to comment just to say: yes, as female and hacker, I feel quite disturbed by that message. And if you care about female hackers you may probably have to reconsider your way of promoting the event. :)

Saludos ;-)
